Buying for someone with an Australian address

A pair of dumbbells sent to a friend or family member in Australia is delivered to their address like any other order. Enter their postcode in the cart and the exact delivery cost shows before you pay.

• Use the recipient's postcode. Delivery is charged per item from the delivery postcode, so the charge reflects where the parcel is going.
• Give a delivery address where someone is present. A 10kg pair is about 20kg of parcel before packaging.
• Allow time for a birthday or Christmas. Dispatch usually takes 1 to 3 business days, and metro delivery usually takes 2 to 7 business days after that. Regional and remote areas take longer.
• Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST.

What delivery costs to an Australian address

These are example charges for one pair to a metro postcode. The cart shows the exact amount for the address you enter.

Regional postcodes cost more. A 10kg pair is about $31.54 to regional NSW and about $68.16 to regional WA. A few items cannot be sent to remote postcodes, and the cart says so.

Four items include delivery to most of Australia: the yoga mat, the massage gun, the pull-up bar and the water bottle. Everything else is charged per item.

Choosing a dumbbell weight

This advice holds wherever you buy. Pick the weight you can lift for the full set of reps with good form, with two or three reps left in reserve at the end.

• Shoulder raises and arm isolation work: most beginners start between 2kg and 5kg per hand.
• Presses, curls and rows: 5kg to 10kg per hand covers most people in their first months.
• Squats, lunges and Romanian deadlifts: the legs handle more, so 10kg to 15kg per hand is a common starting point for people who already train.
• Anyone returning from injury: follow the advice of the physio or doctor treating you, and start lighter than you think.

One pair or a small set

One pair limits you quickly, because the weight that suits a lateral raise is far too light for a squat. Two pairs, one light and one moderate, cover most of a full body routine. A third, heavier pair suits leg work once the moderate pair feels easy.

Buying the light and moderate pairs first and adding the heavier pair later spreads the cost and avoids paying for weight you are not ready to use.

What to check on any dumbbell

• Fixed or adjustable: fixed pairs are quicker to change between sets. Adjustable dumbbells save floor space but take time to reload.
• Head shape: hex heads sit flat on the floor and do not roll. Round heads roll.
• Coating: rubber coated heads are quieter on a floor than bare iron.
• Priced per pair or per dumbbell: stores differ, so check before comparing prices. PeterMat dumbbells are sold as a pair.

Compare the price per kilogram as well as the price per pair. Light pairs often cost more per kilogram than moderate ones. A 2kg pair at $23 is $5.75 per kilogram, and a 5kg pair at $48 is $4.80 per kilogram.

Setting up a space to train

Dumbbells need less room than most home gym gear. A space about 2m by 2m covers standing presses, rows, squats and lunges, with room to put the weights down beside you.

• Floor protection: for anything above a light pair, train over a 10 to 15mm rubber gym mat or rubber flooring tiles. A thin yoga mat is fine for floor work and light pairs, but it is too thin to protect a floor from heavy dumbbells.
• Set the weights down: lowering a dumbbell to the floor instead of dropping it protects the floor and keeps the noise down for anyone below you.
• Storage: keep pairs on the floor against a wall or on a low rack. A heavy dumbbell on a high shelf is a hazard.
• Grip: wipe the handles after a sweaty session so they do not slip on the next one.
