What each pair in the build is for

• 3kg pair ($35): lateral raises, front raises, rear delt work and warm up sets, where even 5kg is too much for most beginners.
• 5kg pair ($48): overhead press, curls, single arm rows and lighter lunges. The everyday upper body weight.
• 10kg pair ($114): goblet squats, Romanian deadlifts, heavier rows, step ups and carries. The leg and back weight.

Three pairs means two can be used in one session, for example 10kg goblet squats followed by 5kg presses and 3kg raises. That covers a full body routine with no bench, rack or bar.

Three costed sets under $300

Each total adds example metro delivery charges to the goods. The yoga mat includes delivery to most of Australia, so it adds nothing to the delivery line for most addresses. The cart shows the exact figure.

The first two sets stay under $300 in every metro area listed. The third is under $300 in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, but comes to about $327 to Perth and about $323 to Hobart. The 6mm yoga mat in the second and third sets is for floor work, stretching and light pairs. It is too thin to protect a floor from a 10kg dumbbell set down hard.

Where the money goes furthest

Per kilogram the 5kg pair is the best buy in this price band at $4.80. The 3kg pair is $5.83 per kilogram and the 10kg pair is $5.70. The 10kg pair is still the one to keep in every set, because it is the only pair heavy enough for leg work.

Where the $300 line stops holding

Delivery timing on a set
