Two pairs is enough to start for most people: a lighter pair for shoulders and arms, and a heavier pair for legs and rows.

Three pair sets, delivered cost

A third pair lets you match the weight to the exercise: light for lateral raises, middle for presses, heavy for squats and rows.

Regional addresses cost more. A 2kg, 5kg and 10kg set is about $256 delivered to regional NSW and about $332 to regional WA. Charges for each pair are on the delivery cost page.

What arrives at the door

• Each pair: two rubber coated hex dumbbells with chrome handles. The weight named is per dumbbell, so a 10kg pair is 20kg in total.
• No assembly: each dumbbell is a fixed weight, so there are no plates, collars or tools.
• Packaging: cardboard cartons. Open them where they land and carry one dumbbell at a time.

Check the weight on each dumbbell against the order when it arrives. If something is damaged or wrong, the process is on the returns page.

PeterMat is online only, so there is no pickup

There is no shop, showroom or pickup point. Every order is delivered from a supplier warehouse to the address you give at checkout, and delivery is available within Australia only.

If no one is home during the day, a work address with a reception desk is often the simplest choice for a heavy carton. Put unit numbers, gate codes or building access notes in the delivery instructions at checkout.

Buying the set at once versus adding pairs later

Delivery is charged per item, so a pair costs the same to send whether it comes in a full set or on its own. That takes delivery out of the decision.

• Buy the set at once if you already know your working weights, or if you want every pair ready on day one.
• Start with two pairs if you are new to weights. A 5kg and 10kg set covers most exercises for the first few months.
• Add the heavy pair later: when you can do 12 or more good reps with your heaviest pair, the next one up will get used.

If you are buying for a date, such as a birthday or the start of a training block, order about two weeks ahead for a metro address and longer for a regional one. Peak periods around Christmas stretch every estimate. If the set arrives after your start date, do bodyweight squats, lunges and push ups until it does.

Adding a mat or accessories to the same order

Four items include delivery to most of Australia, so they add their price and no delivery charge in most postcodes: the 6mm Non-Slip TPE Yoga Mat ($60), the Percussion Massage Gun ($48), the Doorway Pull-Up Bar ($34) and the Insulated Water Bottle ($29).

The yoga mat suits floor work, stretching and light pairs. It is too thin to protect a hard floor from heavy dumbbells. For that, a 10 to 15mm rubber gym mat or rubber flooring tiles from a hardware store is the better buy. The weight set and mat guide goes through the options.

Ordering step by step

1. Add the pairs you want to the cart.
2. Enter your postcode. The cart works out the delivery charge for each item and shows the total.
3. If an item cannot be sent to your postcode, the cart says so. A few items cannot go to remote postcodes.
4. Add any delivery notes, then pay.
5. Allow 1 to 3 business days for dispatch, then usually 2 to 7 business days for metro delivery.
