Short answer: Renters can train for strength at home with a pair of rubber hex dumbbells, a set of long loop bands and a pressure fit pull-up bar. The kit on this page starts at $114 for a 10kg dumbbell pair, delivery is priced by your postcode in the cart, and nothing needs a screw in the wall.
The short answer
The rules that protect your floor and your neighbours are simple to follow: lower every weight under control, set it down instead of dropping it, train on a rubber mat, and skip jumping if someone lives below you. Following them reduces the risk of marks on the floor and a problem at the end of the lease, though no setup can promise a bond outcome.
- No drops: every exercise below ends with the weight placed on the mat.
- No screws: bands loop round your feet or a solid post, and the pull-up bar holds by pressure.
- Low impact: no jumps, no box work, no slams.
Romanian deadlifts for renters
The Romanian deadlift suits a rental because the dumbbells never need to touch the floor between reps. You start standing, push your hips back until the dumbbells reach mid shin, then stand up again. The weight stays in your hands for the whole set.
- Stand on your mat with a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs.
- Soften your knees and push your hips back, keeping the dumbbells close to your legs.
- Lower for a count of three until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings, usually just below the knee.
- Stand up by driving your hips forward.
- At the end of the set, bend your knees and place both dumbbells on the mat. Never let them fall from hip height.
A 10kg pair gives 20kg in total, which suits 3 sets of 10 to 12 for most adults. The Romanian deadlift guide covers form in more detail.
Goblet squats for renters
A goblet squat uses one dumbbell held at your chest by the head, so there is nothing to drop and your feet stay planted. It is quiet enough for an upstairs apartment at most hours.
- Set up: feet shoulder width, toes turned out slightly, dumbbell held vertically against your chest.
- Lower: sit down between your heels for three seconds, elbows inside the knees.
- Stand: push through the whole foot. Do not bounce out of the bottom.
- Load: one 10kg dumbbell for 3 sets of 10 to 15. When that is easy, add a 3 second pause at the bottom before you buy anything heavier.
More cues are in the goblet squat guide.
Bulgarian split squats for renters
The Bulgarian split squat puts your back foot on a couch, bed edge or sturdy chair, so one leg does most of the work. That makes a light pair feel heavy, which is useful when you only have one pair in a small flat.
- Put a towel on the furniture under your back foot to protect the fabric.
- Start with bodyweight, then hold a 5kg dumbbell in each hand.
- Lower slowly until your back knee is a few centimetres above the mat. Do not let it knock the floor.
- Do 3 sets of 8 to 10 on each leg, front leg first, then swap.
If the furniture slides on hard floors, do a standard split squat with your back foot on the mat instead.
Resistance band exercises for renters
Bands make no noise and need no anchor screwed into a door or wall. The Resistance Band Loop Set is five 208cm latex loops, light to heavy, for $59. Each loop is long enough to stand on, wrap round your feet when seated, or loop round a solid post, such as a stair newel or a steel verandah post.
| Exercise | How to anchor the band | Sets and reps |
|---|---|---|
| Band pull-apart | Hold in both hands, no anchor | 3 x 15 |
| Seated row | Loop round your feet, legs straight | 3 x 12 |
| Overhead press | Stand on the loop | 3 x 10 |
| Banded good morning | Stand on it, loop behind your neck | 3 x 12 |
| Assisted pull-up | Loop over the pull-up bar, knee in the band | 3 x 5 |
| Face pull | Loop round a solid post at head height | 3 x 15 |
Check the post is fixed to the structure before you pull on it. A door handle, curtain rod or towel rail is not a safe anchor. The resistance band workout guide has a longer program.
Pull-ups in a rental
The Doorway Pull-Up Bar is an Everfit telescopic bar for openings from 90 to 125cm wide. It holds by pressure with a double safety lock, so there are no screws or holes. It is $34 with delivery included to most of Australia.
- Measure first: many internal doorways are narrower than 90cm. Hallways and wider openings are often a better fit.
- Check the frame: both ends need to press on solid timber, masonry or plasterboard over a stud. Hollow plasterboard can dent.
- Check the paint: pressure can mark the frame. Look at the contact points after the first week of use.
- Check it is tight before each session and lower yourself slowly at the end of each rep rather than dropping to the floor.
If you cannot do a full pull-up yet, see the pull-up progression.
Mobility drills for renters
Mobility work is silent and needs only floor space about the size of a yoga mat. These five drills take about 8 minutes and work well as a warm up or on a day off.
- Cat cow: 10 slow reps on hands and knees.
- World's greatest stretch: 5 each side, lunge, elbow to instep, then rotate.
- 90/90 hip switch: 8 each side, seated, knees swinging side to side.
- Thoracic rotation: 8 each side, lying on your side with knees bent.
- Deep squat hold: 3 x 30 seconds, holding a dumbbell as a counterweight if needed.
The 6mm TPE yoga mat ($60, delivery included to most of Australia) gives grip and padding for this floor work.
Jump rope in a rental
Skipping is the one exercise on this list that renters should think twice about. Each landing sends impact through the floor, and in an apartment with someone below, a mat reduces the noise without removing it. We do not sell a jump rope.
- Best option: skip outside, on a driveway, courtyard or a park path.
- Ground floor on a slab: skip on a thick rubber mat, 10 to 15mm, during the day.
- Upstairs or timber floors: swap skipping for quiet conditioning such as fast step-ups on a low stair, or a dumbbell circuit with short rests.
The jump rope workout guide has sessions for when you can skip outside.
A 30 minute quiet session
This session uses a 10kg pair, a 5kg pair, the loop bands and the mat. Do it two or three times a week on non-consecutive days.
| Block | Exercise | Sets x reps | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm up | Mobility drills above | 1 round | 8 min |
| A1 | Goblet squat, one 10kg dumbbell | 3 x 12 | 6 min |
| A2 | Band seated row | 3 x 12 | with A1 |
| B1 | Romanian deadlift, 10kg pair | 3 x 10 | 6 min |
| B2 | Band overhead press | 3 x 10 | with B1 |
| C1 | Bulgarian split squat, 5kg pair | 2 x 8 each leg | 6 min |
| C2 | Pull-up or band assisted pull-up | 2 x 5 | with C1 |
| Finish | Band pull-apart and plank | 2 rounds | 4 min |
Do the paired exercises back to back, then rest 60 to 90 seconds. Add a rep each week until you reach the top of the range, then slow the lowering to four seconds.
Noise and floor protection
We do not currently stock a rubber gym mat. A 10 to 15mm rubber mat or interlocking rubber flooring tiles from a hardware store are the general recommendation for a dumbbell area in a rental. They spread the load and soften the sound of a dumbbell being set down.
- Set weights down, never drop them: bend your knees and place each dumbbell on the mat. The rubber shell on hex dumbbells helps, but a drop from hip height can still mark timber or tile.
- Store dumbbells on the mat: the hex shape stops them rolling across the floor.
- Pick your time: mid morning to early evening is the safest window for neighbours. Save late night sessions for mobility and band work.
- Mind shared walls: keep band anchors and the pull-up bar away from a wall you share with a neighbour if you can.

$60Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best strength exercises for renters?
Goblet squats, Romanian deadlifts, split squats, band rows and presses, and pull-ups on a pressure fit bar. None of them involve jumping or dropping a weight, and none need anything screwed into the wall.
How do I do Romanian deadlifts in an apartment without damaging the floor?
Keep the dumbbells in your hands for the whole set, lower them for three seconds, and place them on a rubber mat at the end. The weight never needs to touch the floor between reps, so there is nothing to drop.
Can I use a pull-up bar in a rental?
A pressure fit bar such as the $34 Everfit doorway bar needs no screws and fits openings from 90 to 125cm. Check that both ends press on a solid frame and look at the paint at the contact points after the first week, because pressure can leave marks.
How do I anchor resistance bands without a door anchor?
Long 208cm loop bands can be stood on, wrapped round your feet when seated, or looped round a solid post such as a stair newel. Do not use door handles, curtain rods or towel rails as anchors.
Is jump rope okay in an apartment?
Skipping is noisy for anyone below you, even on a mat. Skip outside where you can, or on a 10 to 15mm rubber mat on a ground floor slab during the day. Upstairs, quiet dumbbell circuits are the better choice.
What mat should renters put under dumbbells?
A 10 to 15mm rubber mat or rubber flooring tiles from a hardware store suit a dumbbell area. We do not currently stock one. A 6mm yoga mat is fine for mobility and floor work but is thin for setting dumbbells down.
