The Quick Answer
For general home gym use with free weights: 15-25mm. That's the sweet spot — enough cushioning to protect floors and absorb impact, but firm enough for stable lifting.
Thickness by Exercise Type
Bodyweight & Yoga (4-8mm)
Thin mats provide just enough cushioning for knees and elbows during floor exercises. Not suitable for dropping weights. Our Premium Yoga Mat (6mm) is ideal here.
General Fitness (10-15mm)
Light dumbbell work, resistance bands, HIIT workouts. Foam tiles work well at this thickness range.
Free Weights & Dumbbells (15-25mm)
This is where most home gyms live. The PeterMat Round at 20mm is purpose-built for this. Heavy enough to protect floors, firm enough for stable footing.
Heavy Lifting & Drops (25mm+)
Olympic lifting, heavy deadlifts, and situations where you might drop loaded bars. The PeterMat Zero uses dense recycled rubber that handles serious impacts.
Floor Type Matters Too
- Concrete garage: 20mm minimum — concrete is unforgiving
- Timber/hardwood: 15mm minimum — protects against dents and scratches
- Tile: 20mm minimum — tiles crack easily under dropped weights
- Carpet: 10-15mm — carpet provides some base cushioning, but instability is the issue here. Use a firm mat for stability
